The Telstar Middle School Visual Art Blog

General Art Class April 26, 2011

The required General Class at TMS currently meets during 50 minute periods every other day for one semester of the school year. All art classes this year are mixed level groups (6th, 7th, and 8th graders together in one class).  Students are required to bring a pencil and their planner to every class. Current activities and assignments for these classes are listed below-

General Art – April 2012

Final Independent Project artworks are due no later than May 31st, 2012.

Students have also been preparing selected artworks for the upcoming Telstar Art Exhibition – which will be held at the Telstar Complex on May 24th, 2012, from 5pm-8pm.

General Art – 10/24/11-11/4/11

Over these last two weeks, students have worked to complete their Visual Music projects, which are explained in this notebook (this works best in Safari) >>

Final Visual Music projects were due 11/1 (white day) or 11/2 (blue day) and we also held class critiques of artworks on 11/3 and 11/4. Students also completed Q.1 portfolio reflections and selected one “best work” from Q.1 for inclusion in the spring art exhibit. All other assignments and artworks from Q.1 were returned to students.

General Art – 10/3-10/14/11

During the last two weeks, General Art classes met for either two or three class sessions due to the NECAP testing schedule. Each class began the Visual Music unit, learning about the artist Wassily Kandinsky and his artistic relationship with composer Arnold Shoenberg. Students created visual improvisations in response to a variety of musical styles using ink and pastel, and they were also introduced to a variety of ways that artists can use inspiration from music to make creative and well-crafted works of visual art. General Art – Week of 9/26-9/30/11

This week, students finished the Visual Poetry project and participated in a collaborative art critique.

General Art – Week of 9/19-9/23/11

This week, students continued the Visual Poetry project, in which students are creating original work of art to communicate a specific mood or moods with found word poetry, collage, and other two-dimensional media.

General Art – Week of 9/12-9/16/11

This week, students finished the Free Draw project and completed a self-assessment. They also began the Visual Poetry project, in which students will create an original work of art to communicate a specific mood or moods with found word poetry, collage, and other two-dimensional media.

General Art – Week of 9/6-9/9/11

During this week of classes, students finished designing covers for their personal art folders and began the Free Draw project.  Students also reviewed the Elements of Art and Principles of Design and they studied the principles of Contrast/Variety and Rhythm in depth.  Students set goals for how to include these two principles in their Free Draw artworks.

General Art – Week of 8/31-9/2/11

In this first week of classes, students learned about classroom rules, procedures, and studio safety.  They also began designing covers for their personal art folders.  Students were asked to use their best creativity and craftsmanship to create these designs.  Each student will use their art folders throughout the semester to store, sketches, class notes, and artworks, and personal reflections.
