This class is offered for a full year at all grade levels. It meets during 50 minute periods daily, with students attending either on Blue days or White days. All art classes are mixed level groups (6th, 7th, and 8th graders together in one class). This class is designed for students who want to improve their artistic skills and creativity. All Advanced Art students are expected to be involved in and attend both of our annual Fine Arts shows: the ArtReach (December 8th, 2011 – 5pm-8pm at Telstar) and the Telstar Art Exhibition (held in May – date TBD). Students are required to bring a pencil and their planner to every class. Current activities and assignments for these classes are listed below-
Advanced Art – Spring 2012
We have been very busy in Advanced Art in the spring of 2012. As part of our ArtReach project, we took a field trip to Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation and Sunday River ski resort in Newry. After volunteering our time to help during this trip, a small group of students chose to be involved in Maine Adaptive’s annual Ski-A-Thon fundraiser in March. We raised $1,000 for the organization through this effort and had a wonderful time at the event. In recent visual art projects, students have been learning realistic drawing skills, creating independently designed visual art projects, writing personal artist statements, and preparing for the upcoming Telstar Art Exhibition – which will be held at the Telstar Complex on May 24th, 2012, from 5pm-8pm. All Advanced Art students are required to participate in this event – and students have a variety of options to meet this requirement.

Advanced Art – 11/7/11-12/16/11
We have been very busy in Advanced Art this past month. We launched our website – www.wix.com/tmsserv/artreach, we prepared for and hosted the 7th annual ArtReach event on December 8th, 2011, and we premiered our ArtReach film, titled “SERV”. Information about the work done by ArtReach teams is updated regularly at our website on the “process” page, and our film will soon be viewable on our website as well. We would like to thank everyone who helped us to make the ArtReach event a success. We raised $880 for the Maine Wildlife Park and the Maine Handicapped Skiing organization. Our next field trip, to volunteer with Maine Handicapped Skiing, will be scheduled soon. We are hoping that it will happen on a Thursday or Friday in January 2012.

Advanced Art – 10/24/11-10/28/11
This week, students worked on their ArtReach art projects, as well as with their ArtReach work groups. We are still working on the ArtReach project website, which should be up and running soon. Many students in Advanced Art also attended one or two field trips this week. On the first field trip, Tuesday and Wednesday, Mrs. Slattery and Mrs. Prescott took sixteen 6th and 7th grade students identified as positive service-learning leaders to the 4H camp to mentor Mrs. Keane’s and Mrs. Prentice’s 5th grade classes as they begin their own service-learning projects. Our students received teambuilding and leadership training from the 4H Camp staff and they did a wonderful job of working with the 5th graders. These students will continue to be involved in assisting these 5th grade classes throughout the year.
Our second field trip, on Friday, October 28th, was to the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray, ME. Twenty-two 6th-8th grade students who chose to be on the “Maine Wildlife Park field trip team” attended this trip. They volunteered their time raking leaves from the grounds of the park, and they also went on a guided tour to learn more about what the park does and the animals that it cares for. Our ArtReach film team took some great footage of the park and interviewed some of their staff. This footage will be included in our upcoming ArtReach film, to be shown on the night of the ArtReach.
The December ArtReach event is scheduled for Thursday, December 8th, 2011 from 5pm-8pm at Telstar. All Advanced Art students are expected to be involved in and/or attend this event.

Advanced Art – Week of 9/12-9/16/11
This week, students finished the brainstorming process to decide on this year’s ArtReach cause. They decided to support two worthy organizations: The Maine Wildlife Park and Maine Handicapped Skiing. The project will be called “SERV” for Special Environments Restoring Vitality. Students also finished their “Show me what you got” Free Draw assignments and began their ArtReach art projects, which will be included in the student art sale at the December ArtReach event (date TBA soon). Finally, students chose ArtReach project teams. First, they selected which “ArtReach Field Trip Team” they wanted to be a part of – either Maine Wildlife Park or Maine Handicapped Skiing. This choice will determine which field trips each student will attend. Second, students selected an ArtReach Project Work Team – Web Communications, Research and Messaging – Maine Wildlife Park, Research and Messaging – Maine Handicapped Skiing, ArtReach Film Team, and ArtReach Event Planning team. Each of these teams will soon begin work on specialized tasks to support the ArtReach service-learning project.
